NFL hires independent investigator for Ray Rice case

The NFL confirms that it has hired former FBI director Robert Mueller to investigate their handling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal.

The NFL has announced that it has hired an independent investigator to examine their handling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse case.

Former FBI director Robert Mueller will oversee the case after a report from The AP claimed that the NFL had a copy of the video, which showed the former Baltimore Ravens running back striking his wife, in their possession for three months before its release on Monday.

The NFL owners will also oversee the investigation as the Pittsburgh Steelers' Art Rooney and the New York Giants' John Mara will assist in the operation and report back to the other 30 members.

Mara and Rooney said in a joint statement: "Commissioner [Roger] Goodell called us on Wednesday evening and requested that we oversee the independent investigation that will be conducted by former FBI Director Robert Mueller III.

"Our role is not to conduct or direct the investigation but to support Mr. Mueller and assist him in gaining whatever access or resources he needs. At the conclusion of Mr. Mueller's investigation, we will receive his findings on behalf of the league's owners."

Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL and released by the Ravens when the video was released on Monday.
