Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson urges the club to sign out-of-contract Chelsea winger Willian, who almost joined Spurs in 2013.

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to move for Willian when his Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old was close to joining Spurs from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, undergoing a medical before changing his mind at the 11th hour and joining Chelsea instead.

Willian's time at Stamford Bridge appears to be coming to a close this summer with talks over an extension having stalled, and Robinson believes that the Brazilian would be a good signing for Spurs seven years after they narrowly missed out on him.

"It would be a good signing. I think it is a player who Mourinho knows well. I would be surprised if Chelsea let him go because he is a top player," he told Football Insider.

"Spurs have a lot of attacking midfield players and he fits that bill as to what they have already got. There would have to be a few outgoings but that is a manager putting his stamp on a squad.

"Implementing the changes and getting the players he wants. Mourinho was brought in for a reason and Spurs will have to let him do that to an extent. There would have to be outgoings first to make room. He is very similar to what they have already got."

Willian has made 329 appearances for Chelsea and is understood to want to stay in London even if he leaves the Blues.
